Local Know-How

Why Leather Wears Out Faster in Chicago

Chicago's swing from dry, heated winters to humid summers is hard on leather. These are the problems we see most around the city.

Brown leather sofa and armchairs near a lit fireplace in a wood-paneled living room in winter

Dry winter heat at home

From November to March, radiators and forced-air furnaces pull the moisture out of indoor air. A sofa next to a vent in a Portage Park bungalow or a Lakeview two-flat dries out, stiffens and starts cracking along the seat and arm folds. We clean the surface, fill and flex-seal the cracks, then recolor and seal the leather so it stays supple.

Road salt and slush in the car

Salt tracked in on winter boots leaves white rings on seats and door panels, and sliding in and out all winter wears through the driver's side bolster first. We remove the salt residue, rebuild worn bolsters and refinish them to match the rest of the seat, usually right in your driveway or garage.

Summer sun and lake humidity

South- and west-facing windows in downtown high-rises fade leather unevenly, and boats kept at the city's lakefront harbors take sun, spray and mildew all season. We bring back faded color, clean mildew from marine vinyl and add UV protection.

FAQ

Leather Repair in Chicago: Common Questions

Do you come to my home or business in Chicago?

Yes. We work on-site anywhere in Chicago, at homes, condos, garages, offices, restaurants and marinas. Most furniture and car seat repairs are finished in a single visit, so nothing has to be moved out of your place.

Where is your Chicago location?

We're at 5924 W Lawrence Ave, Unit B, Chicago, IL 60630, just east of Austin Avenue between Portage Park and Jefferson Park. Since most of our work is on-site, please call (224) 833-4909 before stopping by so we can set a time.

How much does leather repair cost in Chicago?

It depends on the size of the piece, the type of damage and whether only one area or the whole piece needs recoloring. Send a few photos and we'll give you a free, no-obligation price. Repair usually costs a fraction of replacing a sofa or reupholstering a car seat.

How long does a repair take?

Most spot repairs, such as a crack, burn, tear or worn bolster, take a few hours on-site. Recoloring a full sofa or replacing damaged panels takes longer, and we'll tell you the timeline with your estimate.

Can you fix salt stains and cracked car seats after winter?

Yes. We clean out road-salt residue, repair cracks and worn bolsters, and refinish the leather to match the rest of the seat. Fixing a worn bolster early keeps the crack from spreading into the seat panel.

Do you repair vinyl and faux leather too?

Yes. We repair vinyl on boats, RVs, restaurant booths, medical chairs and gym equipment, as well as faux leather furniture. If a piece isn't worth repairing, we'll tell you honestly during the estimate.
